2019 ASTC USITT Renovation Challenge
Director’s Choice Award Winner -USITT Louisville 2019
The astc & usitt renovation challenge is a biannual competition that tasks teams of graduate or undergraduate students with selecting a local theatre venue or auditorium and generating a proposal package for how they could improve this space for their needs. For our Florida state team, we took our mainstage theatre - the Fallon - and proposed a variety of improvements. My share of the project focused on improvements to the costume shop.
The start of our Renovation project required some fact finding. What issues and challenges did the Costume shop face on a regular basis? What were the overall dimensions of not only both the spaces but also the necessary equipment?
Space was a frequent stress point. All doors throughout the spaces provided a maximum width of 40", meaning all the shop's industrial equipment would require disassembly to transport and all new equipment would require a new door be installed.
Ground plan of the (at the time) current layout of the costume shop. We took advantage of this opportunity to create accurate drawings of these backstage spaces we did not already have draftings of in house.
Ground plan of our proposed changes; Increased natural light with 9 new windows along east and west walls, replacement of all doors with 50" doors openings.
