Shogi table
(Personal Project - Ongoing)
During the downtime of the Pandemic, like many others I explored new and old hobbies. I discovered the game of Shogi, a Japanese board game very similar to chess, and decided I would like to build my own set tying in my passions of woodworking and making. Though currently unfinished, this project utilizes many different processes from traditional woodworking to cnc milling and laser engraving.
3D Model of the Shogi table depicting the main playing board and shogi pieces, hardware-less drawer slide for captured game pieces, and turned legs modeled after Gardenia flowers.
A drafting plate selection depicting the hardware-less drawer slides and drawer dadoes.
The inverted pyramid inset inside the bottom of the shogi board is a design inclusion typical of traditional shogi boards to assist with material deflection and acoustics of laying down the playing pieces.
A 3/4 perspective of the board sans legs & utilizing its drawer.
Laser Engraved Shogi Table top is constructed from Curly Maple and engraving designed with Adobe Illustrator.
Laser Engraved Drawer front (Top) & capture pieces tray (Bottom). Drawer Front is designed using traditional Japanese Fan motifs & the tray has a description of each game piece and it's eligible move sets.
